Dia de los Muertos / Samhain '09

Dear Neophyte,

This is what I did to celebrate Halloween in 2009 with my sister.  We have been getting together for this holiday since we were children.  Only in the last four years or so did we celebrate it as a religious day.  I looked forward to it each and every year.
(random picture from the web :)

1.  Betty Roulette performance at the Lipstick Lounge in Nashville, Tennessee.  I DID take the below picture at said Betty Roulette show.  One way to walk away with half the bar patron's phone numbers is to be the only one NOT wearing black, leather, feathers or sequins :D

2. Long ass walk up the road to discuss the years progression of our craft lessons.  We each learned something about the other: both of us believe and live the code that if a witch can heal.. she can also harm.  Never piss off a non-Wiccan Witch if you value anything at all...

(I'll be nice and NOT link two World of Warcraft pics of my priest - One as a healer doing over half the raid healing as a Holy Priest against two resto druids and a paladin - and the second of him doing 20k dps NOT raid buffed)

3. Throw the roast in the oven *before* it gets dark.  If you've never cooked a roast then I assure you that a five inch thick slab of meat will indeed take longer to cook than a thin layer of chicken nuggets in your oven :)
Not my picture.

4. Celebrating the harvest and honoring your ancestors are the two things that every tradition around the world can celebrate.  Even though my sister and I and her husband all come from different Pagan paths, we were bound together by these two constants in our celebrations.

5. Set up a table for the Dumb Supper / Ancestor feast.  Made offerings and prayers to and for our ancestors.  This is about the amount of food on each plate and my plates were black.  They were a gift to my from my Grandmother so I though they were appropriate.
This isnt my pick.

6.  Set the feast on the table, made personal prayers, blessed the feast.  Before we chowed down, Melissa read a Samhain story out loud from her BoS.

7. Shamhain is the ending of one year but the new year doesn't begin until Yule.  Think about this....

8. When the feast ended, we wrote out resolutions on slips of paper.

9.  Pour out the Dumb Suppers and libations asking that the Gods feed my ancestors threw the year if my own offerings (threw the year) were not enough.  Critters ate happy that night :)  I had planned to incorporate ancestor offerings into my yearly worship but I dont have the room to put up a shrine to them.  Nor, in truth, anything to put on it...

What is it with me and libations, by the way?  I guess it's the Aquarian.  Were perpetually pouring out the libations...

Not my pic.

10.  Made the bon fire and burned our resolutions. This year must remember to bless the fire and jump it for purification.

Not my pic.

11.  Prayers and meditations for the coming year.  I asked to find my totem animal or spirit guide.  Right after I asked, I heard dogs howling.  Recently its come to my attention that the Wolf is my (current?) totem animal. I'm bias :)

12.  Melissa did a belly dance to Wings for Marie in honor of her grandmother.

14.  Lit a candle on the East side of the house on the back deck (should have been the west) to show the Blessed Dead the way back to the house.  The candle stayed lit all night, by the way, and was still a-flame the next morning... after staying outside all night (forgotten by us, apparently).

13.  We threw the cards and did pendulum divination after the fire burned out and we had gone back inside.  Apparently my sister's fat cat will never get over herself (this was my question).  Melissa's question about kids was a resounding "You wont have any, but only if your careful!"  My inner question of finding Arden was met with a pendulum who refused to cooperate - and I was using a wedding ring!

Not my pic but I damn sure wish it were!

14. I hand sewed three pouches to use for herb-filled sleep pillows (for prophetic dreams) but Aaron and Melissa couldn't decide on an herbal combination to put in them so we scrapped that idea :p  Besides, it was really late at this point.

15. Crawl into bed and not have one single dream for the next four nights...

By the way, Halloween last year was on the actual full moon.  Interesting if you think of all of those posibilities.

What I learned by last years celebrations are three things:  1).  Know what you want before you start praying.  2). Plan a lot of activities and plan not to be able to complete allot of those activities.  3).  Sometimes the gods choose not to answer your prayers.  It may be because your not ready, because you're not trying and dont deserve it, or because it's not what your alloted in this lifetime.

Natches Trace and Apothecary Field Trip

Dear Neophyte,

Up on the Natches Trace Bridge, the view is AMAZING!  It makes you realize, nestled in the magical foothills of the Smokey Mountains where there are natural earthen walls all around you, just how BIG the world is!

I didnt take this picture, but I've been on that bridge.  You can walk dead center of the road and still feel like your going to fall off.  Both my sister and I got physically ill from the visual (we've never been that high above the ground before - were foothills girls and not mountain climbers!) so we had to practically crawl back to  her car.

But oh my GOD was it beautiful and worth every nauseated step further and further away from the 'ground' and into the 'air'.

I brought back all the samples I took while on the trace, and tried to identify them on the computer.  Here's a picture of each (snagged from the web) of the most common ones.

Field trips to replenish my herbal supplies need to be routine.  I used to do this to collect ceder leaves and bark when I lived in Pulaski TN.

First step in my wildcrafting my apothecary full of medical and magical herbs!  Also, sorry for the bad spacing.  Blogger.com wont do the spacing right in the actual typesetting.  It will only show the bad spacing in the preview of the finished blog post (which doesnt help at all).

Forest of Fantasy

Dear Neophyte,

I need to go to the woods more often.  I need to make this a weekly thing.  A bag, a towel, my sketch book, some offerings and some water.  And my ears and my eyes and my skin.  And a camera.  Yeah, should just about cover it!

I really enjoyed being outside but I cant get anyone to go to the woods with me.  I used to have a dog that went with me but then he was stolen.  This was before I knew enough about how to find where the dog fights were and go get my dog back witchcraft to protect him from a magical end.

I loved my sister's house, when she lived in Tennessee.  The *magic* of this kind of family.  No hiding, no wondering and no worrying. I could run nekked threw the woods with her and never worry about being judged about being Pagan.

So, anyway.  Bag-o-stuff, no trail and a good bug-free spot to sit and draw.

I tried to listen to the trees today and they just told me to sshhhshshshshhhhssssuuuuussssshhhhhshshhshsh.....

Book Review: "Sticks, Stones, Roots and Bones"

Dear Neophyte,

I borrowed this book from my sister.  It's a broad and very open beginner book on Hoodoo.
Despite finding at least four errors (magic and mundane) by page 34 and the Fluffy Bunny Lewellyn fluffshite, I read threw it in three days.

This book introduced me to Foot Track Magic and the magical warfare. Foot Track Magic is now my new area of study.  And war bottles.  Facinating ancestor-cousins to my well-loved Witch Bottles.

Which Bottles are an interesting study in and of themselves.  I've made two.  The first one got rid of a person in my life who had misused me on every level for over a decade.  It disappeared after that, never to be seen again.

I took lots of notes on spiritual house cleansing and why paying attention to the ashe, oshugun and tree spirits is important.  Lots of good info on protecting the hearth and home, ancestor veneration and care.  Also lots of info I was shocked made its way into any Lewellyn book...

Left-handed magic.  The info came under the topic of the war bottles used to send bad juju at someone.  Under the topic of foot track magic, it's used to ward and curse someone.  Though it was pretty vague and only two examples were given of how to go about it, it was still more than I expected.  I ait it up.

I'm not fluff, I wrote a whole essay denouncing the Rede as being impractical.  I damn sure know I want to find a way to curse my enemies into oblivion if I need to.  Useful info I could have used when a 21 year old man wasnt being nice to my 14 year old sister.  He'd have been dead if I had my way.  Some people are still alive today because I'm too old to be tried as a child.

This book is recommended for the complete novice to Hoodoo.  And by complete novice, I mean someone who has never heard of the terms 'rootwork', 'war bottle' or 'iron water'.
Anyway, I filled up a good many pages of my Hearth Craft tab of my housekeeping book and about 20 pages of my BoS.  This is more than enough information for me to research the topic on my own now and fill in what the book left out.

Throwing the Cards

Dear Neophyte,

I threw the cards October 26th of last year and this is what I came up with.  One year latter and, threw much trial and error, I have determined I either need to try harder to accomplish the goals in my life or start kicking people in the face who deliberately stand in my way.

I diverse to be happy but I dont think some of the people I chose to be around think I deserve it.

Conclusion from the cards:  I am responsible for my situation. I label all the mystery out of my life, close myself off to change and suggestion, and have lost contact with the real me.  I am fractured and unhappy because I am not living wholy as I need to be.

Solutions, in list form:
I need to become Queen of My Domain.
I need to set up a Family Meeting Night.
I need to get out of the house.
I need to label myself.
I need to fix what is bad, regarding thoes lables.
I need to go into nature more.
I need to reconnect with the old me.  (write what the old me was like and study it)
I need to be more aware of my Carbon Footprints.
I need to take care of my home Environment.
I need to cake care of my Home (Earth).
I need to put (more) effort into my religious studies and practices.
I need to be consistent bout the right things.
I need to be particular (about what really matters).
I need to eat better.
I need to practice dancing.
I need to open up emotionaly to my friends and family.

Most of this I have worked on.  I know what I can accomplish in my current situation.  Its sad to note that in other aspects of my life I'm being held back - sadder still that I think it is on purpose by people who are trying to use me.
